Phillip Piperides was born in Nicosa, Cyprus in 1956 and his family moved to Australia in 1967.
As a teenager his involvement with clay and his drive to model it into sculpture was the driving force for him to join the private classes of Russian-born sculptor George Virine (1972-1976)
Piperides further explored sculpture in Brisbane until 1983 when he embarked an a tour travelling to Greece studying with Greek sculptor Vangilis Moustakas and learning the many facets of bronze casting at the Dimitri Gavallas Foundry. In 1984 he went to work at Pietra Santa to give himself a more thorough sculptural knowledge.
Recipient of the Churchill Fellowship (Sculpture) in 1990 in recognition of his achievements with clay and bronze, Piperides travelled to Canada, U.S.A. and England to further his knowledge in monumental castings.
He has an impressive record of public and private commissions.
Modelling, casting, finishing, Piperides controls every step of the process of bronze sculpture making. His virtuosity at modelling and his innovative patinas, through their remarkable variations, convey the voluptuous richness of the human body. |
